How to Find Time for Kickboxing Classes

How to Find Time for Kickboxing Class

Have you been meaning to try kickboxing classes but feel like you don’t have the time?

Don’t worry, you’re not alone.

Lack of time is one of the top reasons people give to explain why they don’t exercise.

But there are lots of ways to carve out 15-minute blocks in your day.

Do that a few times, and you’ve got an extra 45 minutes to take a kickboxing class!

Here are some ideas from Men’s Health:

1. FLIP OFF FACEBOOK.
The average American spends at least 7 hours a month on Facebook, according to Neilsen. Let’s do the math: Seven hours a month works out to 105 minutes each week, or hmmm, guess what? Exactly 15 minutes every single day.

2. SAY “NO!”
We know. You think you can do it all and you hate to say the N word. But we think you’ll really like it once you try it. Next time someone asks you to do something you really don’t want or need to do, say, “I’m sorry. No. I just can’t” and feel the freedom—and all that free time—wash over you. (Say it to your boss and you may have a lot of free time on your hands!)

3. PLAN YOUR PEAKS.
We all have certain times of the day when we are most focused and productive. Schedule your biggest tasks for that time (for many people it’s in the morning, say 9 am). You’ll get it done more quickly and efficiently than if you wait to tackle it during a natural low point (like midafternoon).

The 7 Best Halloween Books for Kids

The 7 Best Halloween Books for Kids

Are you looking for some good Halloween books to read with your child this month?

If so, check out this article from the blog Modern Parents Messy Kids:

I liked Halloween as a child (what’s not to like?) but as an adult, I find I enjoy it even more.

I’m off the hook for dressing up, since I can costume my children instead, it’s the beginning of the holiday season, and I can finally start pulling out my Halloween book collection.

If you’re looking to bulk up your own collection, here are seven great ones to buy or check out from the library:

1. Skeleton Hiccups by Margery Cuyler and S.D. Schindler
This off-beat book about a skeleton desperately trying to get rid of the hiccups is sure to hit your child’s funny bone (can you guess what finally does get rid of his hiccups?).

2. Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler
This is the #1 Halloween book on Amazon, and for good reason. It’s just so sweet and fun. A witch, zipping along on her broom with her cat, loses various items and is helped by a few kind creatures who, in return, just want to take a spin on her broom. Is there room for all of them?

3. The Spider and the Fly by Mary Howitt and Tony DiTerlizzi
This classic poem gets a decidedly spooky twist, thanks to Tony DiTerlizzi’s black-and-white illustrations. What better way to introduce your child to poetry?

You can find her other 4 picks here.

How Kickboxing Class Helps You Lose Belly Fat Fast

How Kickboxing Class Helps You Lose Belly Fat Fast

Do you want a toned, flat stomach?

Are you still relying on crunches?

If so, we’ve got bad news for you: Crunches are not the most effect abs workout.

“Crunches work only the muscles on the front and sides of your abdomen, but it’s important to target all the muscles of the core to get more defined abs—including lower back, hips, and upper thighs,” explains this article in Shape.

If you’re looking for the fastest way to lose belly fat, you need to work on the side plank, the walkout from push-up position, and the alligator drag.

Not sure how to do them on your own? Then try a kickboxing class at Urban Martial Arts!

We regularly incorporate all three of these exercises in our classes, which is why our members have been able to lose belly fat fast.

How After-School Programs Help Kids Succeed In Life

After-School Programs in Brooklyn

Are you looking for after-school programs in Brooklyn?

Then you probably already know that after-school programs help keep kids safe and off the streets.

But did you know that kids who participate in after-school programs are more likely to stay in school, get better grades, are less likely to be involved in criminal activity?

Check out this article from our archives, which explains how after-school programs help kids succeed in life:

1. Improve kids’ school attendance and test scores
Numerous research studies have demonstrated that students enrolled in after-school programs get better grades and miss fewer days of school than students not enrolled in after-school programs. According to the non-profit organization AfterSchool Alliance, 45% of students enrolled in the federally funded after-school program 21st Century Community Learning Centers improved their reading grades and 41% improved their math grades.

2. Prevent kids from being victims of violence
According to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, juveniles are at most risk of becoming victim of a violent crime during after-school hours — between 2 pm and 6 pm. By keeping kids off the streets during this critical window of time, after-school programs can help keep children safe.

You can find 3 more important benefits for kids in the article.
