How Speed Wraps Can Benefit Your Kickboxing Training

This video kicks off a series in which we’re going to introduce you to some of the newer items in our kickboxing pro shop.

The first item Sensei Serge will be discussing is speed wraps:

How do speed wraps benefit your kickboxing training?

They support your wrists, provide extra padding for your knuckles, and they’re far quicker to put on than traditional handwraps.

Added bonus: They absorb sweat from your hands, causing less residue inside your boxing gloves, which means… not-so-smelly gloves!

If you’d like to purchase a pair, they’re $14.99 and available at our front desk.

August’s Powerful Word is Cooperation

Powerful Words is the name of our character development curriculum here at Urban Martial Arts.

It’s designed by one of the nation’s leading childhood development experts, Dr. Robyn Silverman. Every month, we’ll focus on a different Powerful Word, or concept around character development.

This month’s Powerful Word is COOPERATION.

Here’s a video from Dr. Robyn Silverman in which she introduces some of the concepts we’ll be covering this month:

Cooperation, quite simply, is when we work together towards a common goal.

It is made up of a compilation of social skills such as taking turns, sharing, listening, compromising, rallying together as well as valuing and appreciating others.

Cooperation takes patience, empathy and accountability.

Cooperation is among one of the most important skills that children can master. Read the full article →

We’re expanding! (In more ways than one)

We have an exciting announcement!

We’ve signed a lease on the space next door to us (currently a medical office) and we’ll be knocking down the wall to expand our space.

When the work is done, we’ll have more than doubled the size of Urban Martial Arts!

Not only will our mat be bigger to accommodate more students per class, but we’ll have twice as much seating for parents and family members.

We’ll also have a large classroom on the main floor dedicated to our after-school program, so we will no longer be using the room in the basement.

It’s a big investment for us, but it’s one we’re happy to make because our goal is always to reinvest in the school so we can provide the best possible experience for our students and families.

Please note that we will be closed for renovations from Monday, August 27th to Wednesday, September 5th. We’ll re-open on Thursday, September 6th.

On a more personal note… we’re expanding our family too! We’re expecting our second child (another girl!) in mid-November.

So… lots of changes going on, but all good ones!

Video from Week 3 of Karate Sports Summer Camp

Students in our Karate Sports Summer Camp are continuing to have a blast!

This week, our campers went to the movies to watch “Ice Age: Continental Drift,” did gymnastics training at the Aviator Center, and they did a ton of karate, soccer, basketball, soccer, football, and track & field workouts.

Our character development theme for the week was “optimism,” so all our discussions and activities were focused on that theme.
