Video from Week 1 of Karate Sports Summer Camp

Our Karate Sports Summer Camp officially kicked off last week and it was a blast!

Our campers took a trip to the movies to watch “Brave,” a field trip to Bounce U, and they did a ton of karate, soccer, basketball, soccer, football, and track & field workouts.

Our character development theme for the week was “respect,” so all our discussions and activities were focused on that theme.

In this post, Dr. Robyn answers a question from a parent who wishes her children would take more responsibility when they make mistakes.

Dear Dr. Robyn,

My kids make a lot of mistakes which is to be expected. But when I ask them why they do what they do, they always answer “I don’t know…” Then they want us to help clean up the mess they made or fix the mistake. They don’t take any responsibility and it worries me.

Dear Bill & Danni,

You are correct– it’s expected that children will make mistakes– as they should!

When they make mistakes at young ages (when the stakes are low) they can apply those life lessons later on in life when the stakes are higher.

However, children must also learn accountability.

How to Teach Phone Manners for Kids

Throughout June 2012, we’ll be working on the concept of “courtesy.”

All our discussions and activities will aim to help our students understand that courtesy is more than a gesture of manners or a series of polite words and actions.

It encapsulates empathy, respect for others, and kindness.
