Congratulations to everyone who competed at the Twin Towers Karate Tournament 2011 in Manhattan this weekend!

This was definitely one of the most challenging tournaments we’ve participated in so far. It was exciting to watch the caliber of talent at this event. What an amazing opportunity for our students to experience this level of competition!

Urban Martial Arts took home two 1st place trophies, two 2nd place trophies, four 3rd place trophies, and five 4th place trophies!

For a few of our students, this was only their first or second tournament and as you’ll see in the video above, they showed a lot of heart!

Great job, everybody! We look forward to seeing how you’ll do in the next tournament!

Free Mobile App Helps You Keep On Top of NYC School Calendar

by Carmen Sognonvi, originally published at http://www.urbandojo.com

The start of the school year is just a few days away!

If you have a child in the NYC public school system, it can be hard to keep track of all those half days and school holidays.

But as with everything else nowadays… there’s an app for that – and it’s free!

From A Child Grows in Brooklyn:

One way to stay sane through it all is with this cool new NYC School Calendar app, which is designed to help parents and kids keep track of the important school dates. Designed by John Tran, a New York City public school teacher, the app works by integrating and syncing with an existing calendar so you don’t have to input the school calendar your iPhone.

You can download it from the app store and it’s compatible with the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. The developers report that they’re working on a version that’ll be compatible with the Blackberry and Android phones too.

I plan on downloading this myself! With our Karate After-School Program, we need to be just as on top of the calendar as parents do.
